Liability

Nobody does a better job of defending municipalities from liability claims than SUMAssure. SUMAssure’s liability policy protects subscribers from third party claims for damages resulting in bodily injury or property damage. Based on increase exposure for municipalities, our minimum limit of liability for all municipalities is $10 million.

Excess Liability

Subscribers have the ability and opportunity to purchase limits of liability higher than the standard limit.

Municipal Errors & Omissions

Protects subscribers, its elected officials and municipal staff from claims for:

  • Wrongful acts, whether actual or alleged
  • Errors
  • Omissions
  • Misstatements
  • Misleading statements, act or omission
  • Neglect of duty

Or any other matter claimed against our insureds by reason of their having had the position or status to act on behalf of a SUMAssure insured municipality in the performance of their duties.

Property

SUMAssure presently insures over 2.8 billion dollars in property and equipment. The SUMAssure property insurance policy is an “All Risk” Insurance Policy designed to insure municipal property of every kind and description against physical damage or loss. Our property wording is designed to be one of the broadest wordings available in Canada and while every policy in Canada contains exclusions, we continually work to enhance our coverage to provide less restrictive coverage to our subscribers than what has been traditionally available in the past. Subscribers have the ability to chose their own basis of settlement including:

  • Replacement Cost
  • Actual Cash Value
  • Functional Replacement Cost
  • Wreckage Value

Boiler & Machinery

Most property insurance policies contain exclusions for certain types of losses due to electrical and/or mechanical breakdowns. SUMAssure’s Boiler & Machinery insurance, sometimes known as Equipment Breakdown insurance, provides coverage for the physical and financial damage caused by equipment breakdowns.

Crime

SUMAssure’s crime policy provides coverage for losses due to criminal actions targeting municipal finances. Coverage is provided for inside and outside loss of money and securities or loss due to Employee Dishonesty. SUMAssure’s limit of liability for Employee Dishonesty is sufficient to address the requirements for the Municipal Administrator’s Bond. Therefore, subscribers do not have to purchase a separate bond to cover this exposure.

Environmental Impairment Liability

A specialized insurance policy that covers liability and sometimes cleanup costs associated with long term pollution related exposures.

Aviation

Provides premises liability if you are an owner or operator of a municipal airport. Coverage can be extended to include operational liability protection, Products Liability and Hangar Keepers Liability, if coverage is necessary.

Accidental Death & Disbursement

Provides injury benefits to Councillors, Volunteers and Voluntary Fire Fighters.

Course of Construction

Commonly referred to as a COC, this provides coverage on the project through all phases of its construction, insuring the property against all risks of direct physical loss or damage.

Wrap-Up Liability

Providing coverage if the municipality, general contractor or sub-contractors are found legally liable for bodily injury, property damage and/or loss of use to a third party.

Cyber Liability Insurance

A cyber insurance policy, also referred to as cyber risk insurance or cyber liability insurance coverage is designed to help a municipality mitigate risk by offsetting costs involved with recovery after a cyber-related security breach or similar event. Typically coverage would include recovering costs from physical damages caused by a cyber attack, costs of notification in the event of a privacy breach, and any liability suits against the municipality for damages suffered as a result of a cyber breach.
